How the Atal Pension Yojana Calculator Works
Enter your age (18 to 40), choose the monthly pension you want from age 60, and enter how many years you expect to draw it. APY does not work on an interest rate, so there is no rate to enter.
Your contribution comes from a fixed chart published by PFRDA. It depends only on your entry age and the pension you pick: the younger you join, the lower the monthly amount, because you contribute for more years.
The calculator multiplies the monthly contribution by 12 and by the years left until age 60, and compares that with the pension you would receive. A year-wise table shows how your contributions add up.
Benefits of the Atal Pension Yojana
- Guaranteed pension: you receive a fixed monthly pension of your chosen amount from age 60, no matter how the underlying investments perform.
- Low entry cost: joining at 18 can cost as little as ₹42 a month for a ₹1,000 pension.
- Cover for your family: the pension continues to your spouse after you, and the accumulated corpus goes to your nominee after both of you.
- Government guarantee: the pension is backed by the Government of India and run through the NPS framework by PFRDA.
- Automatic payments: contributions are auto-debited from your bank account, which builds a saving habit.
Formula Used
APY contributions are read from the official chart. The totals then follow:
Years of Contribution = 60 − Age | Total Paid = Monthly Contribution × 12 × Years | Total Pension = Monthly Pension × 12 × Years of Pension- AgeYour age when you join APY (18 to 40)
- Monthly ContributionAmount from the PFRDA chart for your age and chosen pension
- Monthly PensionGuaranteed pension from age 60: ₹1,000 to ₹5,000
Example Calculation
Suppose you join at age 25 and choose a monthly pension of ₹5,000, expecting to draw it for 20 years.
- Age25 years
- Monthly Pension₹5,000
- Years of Pension20 years
- Monthly Contribution = ₹376 for 35 years, Total Paid = ₹1,57,920, Total Pension over 20 years = ₹12,00,000, Corpus to Nominee = ₹8,50,000
Important Assumptions
- The contribution amounts follow the PFRDA chart as we understand it today. The government can revise the chart or the scheme's rules, so confirm the amount with your bank before enrolling.
- The calculator shows monthly contributions. Quarterly and half-yearly options exist, with different amounts on the chart, and are not modelled.
- The pension is a fixed amount and is not adjusted for inflation, so its purchasing power at age 60 will be lower than today.
- The amount returned to the nominee is the indicative figure from the scheme, shown for the pension you chose.
- Late-payment penalties, missed contributions, changes of pension amount and early exit are not modelled.
