How the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme Calculator Works
Enter the amount you plan to deposit, the current SCSS interest rate and the tenure. The government revises the rate every quarter, so you enter it yourself rather than have it fetched live.
SCSS pays simple interest every quarter, and the interest is paid out instead of being added back to your deposit. The calculator therefore multiplies your deposit by the annual rate and divides by four to get the quarterly payout.
You'll see your quarterly interest, total interest over the tenure, and the total amount received (your deposit returned at maturity plus all the interest), along with a year-wise table. The page also shows roughly what the payout works out to per month, which helps with budgeting.
Benefits of the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme
- Regular income: interest is paid every quarter, which suits retirees who want a predictable payout to cover monthly expenses.
- Government-backed safety: SCSS is a sovereign-backed scheme, so it carries virtually no default risk for your deposit.
- Attractive rate: SCSS has typically offered a higher rate than bank fixed deposits, which is why it is one of the most popular options for senior citizens.
- Tax deduction on the deposit: under current rules, deposits qualify for a deduction under Section 80C (old tax regime), up to the overall limit.
- Flexible tenure: the account runs for 5 years and can be extended once by 3 years, so you can continue earning from the same deposit.
Formula Used
SCSS interest is simple (not compounded) and is paid every quarter:
Quarterly Interest = P × r ÷ 4 | Total Interest = Quarterly Interest × 4 × Years- PDeposit amount
- rAnnual SCSS interest rate (as a decimal)
- YearsTenure: 5 years, or 8 years if the account is extended once
Example Calculation
Suppose you deposit ₹15,00,000 in an SCSS account for the standard 5-year tenure.
- Deposit Amount₹15,00,000
- Interest Rate8.2% p.a.
- Tenure5 years
- Quarterly Interest = ₹30,750 (≈ ₹10,250 a month), Total Interest = ₹6,15,000, Total Received = ₹21,15,000
Important Assumptions
- The SCSS interest rate is set by the government and reviewed every quarter, and the scheme's rules can change. The rate used here is whatever you enter, so check the current rate and rules before relying on this for planning.
- The same interest rate is assumed for the entire tenure. In practice the rate on your account is fixed at the time of deposit, and an extended account earns the rate applicable at the time of extension, which may differ.
- Interest is simple and paid out every quarter. The calculator does not assume you reinvest the payouts, so it shows no compounding.
- Income tax and TDS on the interest are not deducted. SCSS interest is taxable, and tax may be deducted at source above a threshold, so your actual take-home may be lower.
- Premature closure, penalties and joint accounts are not modelled.
